Growing up on Vancouver Island, I fell in love with the outdoors! Sailing, kayaking, hiking, mountaineering, camping, you name it. My passion was organizing outdoor expeditions! One day I took a test and leaned that if every one in the world lived like me we would have already destroyed the natural splendor of our planet three times over. I was heart broken, frustrated, and then determent to do things differently! For the next two years I cycled everywhere, ate primarily local and organic food, and then as a grade 12 project, designed, financed, and built my own low impact home.

With the tremendous support of my community, I achieved my mission of proving that not only is it possible to live a sustainable life, but it’s possible to do it in a way that leaves you healthier, happier, and richer than before.

(Video of my home:

It took a tremendous amount of hard work, ingenuity, and perseverance to complete my home, but the real success factor was a supportive community! Over 65 people contributed in different ways, an architect, a sawyer, friends, family, an electrician, the list goes on. As you can imagine, I want nothing more than to give back, and in a big way!

Determined to gain the skills necessary to make a significant contribution I’m now attending a Danish social entrepreneurship school specializing in project, process, and business design. Aspiring to be the best school for the world, The KaosPilots, is rated by business week as one of the world’s top 40 design schools.

It sounds too good to be true, but the education is actually made up of world-class lecturers, and traveling the world completing meaningful, high impact projects. For brevity’s sake I’ll just tell you about one of my favorite projects.

My task as a Process Leader was to ensure the peak performance of the Canadian Youth Delegation at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. This group was made up of 35 of Canada’s best under 30 policy experts, climate scientists, and environmental activists. For 14 intense days I led two coordination meetings each day. My task was to communicate a relevant and clear purpose for the meeting, and ensure all participants were valued, heard, and able to achieve a high level of synergetic collaboration. A typical meeting would include our policy experts highlighting new failures in Canadian national climate policy, the activists responding by planning political stunts, and the media team spreads the message to thousands of people around the world. This was the most intensive rewarding training I could have hoped for, and now I confidently lead group-work for high performance teams.

All that is left of my education is one momentous final project… and the project is impact. In this project I will demonstrate my capability in project, business, and process leadership and design.

I will graduate from The KaosPilots this June.
