2013 International Year of Water Cooperation and Quinoa

There’s an old Afghan proverb:

“A little water is a sea to an ant.”

This more or less summarizes how essential water is not just to an ant but to the entire community on earth at large.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote in his poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner:

“Water, water, every where,

And all the boards did shrink;

Water, water, every where,

Nor any drop to drink.”

A world without boundaries is but an element of fiction. Every country exists in its own realm of governance and regulations. Beyond the existence of the entity called country, lies a battlefield fought for centuries by man to satiate his greed for more resources. Where there is no cooperation, there is war. Where there is war, there are but isolated communities who have lost their identity with a common chain of humanity.

So when we talk about water cooperation, we face the reality of life that there are limited resources but infinite demand. Supply and demand are two perennial forces that shape our lives.

The United Nations (UN) is an organization that helps promote and facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, democracy and lasting world peace. Every year, the UN brings a cause of international significance to the limelight and this year the focus is on Water Cooperation and Quinoa.

Rivers and groundwater are some of the resources that have been the points of contention for centuries. According to, there are 276 international basins. These cover around 46% of the earth’s land surface, host about 40% of the world’s population in 148 nations and account for approximately 60% of global river flow. Notable examples of water cooperation can be found at: ooperation-2013/water-cooperat ion/water-cooperation/

Some statistics to put things in perspective: ooperation-2013/water-cooperat ion/facts-and-figures/en/

Imagine the impact that a cooperation treaty has on the fraction of the affected population that does not have access to clean water. So if one treaty impacts even one-two hundredth of the 780 million population, 3.9 million people are saved from hunger, disease and listlessness. =Rc2XBwxl6vQ&feature=youtu be_gdata

Simple steps to ensure water is not wasted, harvesting rain water and recycling are some methods to ensure water management.

The UN has designated Quinoa as the quintessential remedy for food security and poverty eradication. Some more information on quinoa: =KKnXFrwQivA&feature=youtu be_gdata

The Andean community has centuries of traditional knowledge on the benefits of Quinoa. This crop adapts to various climates and ecologies. It is gluten free and has high quality protein complete with all essential amino acids.

In India, Quinoa’s cost is about Rs. 645 per 340 g of branded Roland White Quinoa. Quite exotic and expensive! Godrej sells 340 gms of Quinoa for Rs. 511. Not very economical!

Is there a way out? Can we cultivate Quinoa in our backyards? Here are some tips on growing quinoa: how-to-grow/vegetable-seeds/Qu inoa/

We need to ponder on the benefits of water cooperation and cultivating Quinoa. How can we contribute to this world movement?
