Hope for the Coming Generation

by Jude Christoper Roxas on 3rd January, 2011 at 3:55 PM CEST

While thinking about what to write for the Weekly Hot Topic, I found myself over the pile of books I have here in my room and randomly picked one and started reading. I got the book called, “Healing the Past, Building the Future: Soundings from Mindanao” by Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, from the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. And this book led me to the idea that I can open the topic about Peace and Development here in Challenge Future.

Forging a culture of peace is considered as a global challenge. There can be a hundred and one things that can destroy peace within our community, to name a few, human trafficking, hostage taking, robbery, murders, rapes, and even with nuclear arms, which are all deeply rooted to having bad relationships.

Many wars in our time have the root causes mostly among the clashing of ideas and perceptions, among the cultural and racial groups coming from the same geographic boundary. Let me share with you a brief background about the struggles of some people here in the Philippines, just as a form of example.

The island of Mindanao from the Philippines is still struggling with regards to peace and development especially with the struggles of the Bangsamoro people who are asserting their full efforts in having a diverse individuality, history, territory and ethnicity against from what they believe as discrimination from the majority. They want to have the right to self determination, which is relatively a recognized right by the United Nations.

The problems that the Bangsamoros are facing include their issues for ancestral domain, human rights, agrarian related things, and social and cultural discrimination and many more things. (Read the full article here

So in this weekly topic, let us add some fire to our passion in helping peace and development be with us as we make this topic hotter. Let us try to see for ourselves the ongoing process of war and peace in our communities and share it to the world. And to add a lead to our discussions, let us reflect on the following question:

What are your actions in restoring or in sustaining peace in your place?

Share your thoughts and let’s create a culture of peace while we lessen the culture of war and violence.

And to end this article, let me share to you a very simple yet meaningful video about the children’s’ desires of having peace and for us to see their points of view about it:

With peace comes development. Development within ourselves, within our society and within the world. Peace will surely help us as we shape and challenge the future.

“Imagine all the people, living in harmony.” John Lennon

Peace be with you all!

Congrats Action Team and Jude for the wonderful 2nd article entry!

Indeed, each of us has our part to play in sustaining peace around the world. How do I do it? I travel... I travel to immerse myself in the diversity and yet I'm always amazed to see how we are all connected at the most fundamental level globally.

Conversation and travel is my personal action to sustaining peace!

This is awesome, and what moved me most was the video from the children - the expression of their perception of peace.

I play a part in sustaining peace around the world, by organizing unity-in-diversity events such as: mini-concerts, debates/fora, exhinitions, etc. which creates an atmosphere for people of diverse cultures, religions, beliefs, traditions, etc., to come together in harmony.

Art and Music is my personal action to sustaining peace!

That is lovely and very much exciting! Thank you Jude for sharing this with us and inspiring the rest of the world with just giving a couple of minutes or hours to this. It is a great feeling to see that there are people all around the world who still has inside the feeling of trust to one another, the belief that peace can be created when it is believed and shared unitedly. Here is my part in this process: I never give up believeing in people even in a world full with pain and distrust. I believe so strong in all people around me and try to make them feel the same and trust in themselves. This is like a chain growing up through sharing and believing in one another. Because if you belive in something and someone so strongly, you can change them into what you belive! Dance is my way to feel peace inside :)

Thank you so much guys! i've taken this step seriousy so that i can deliver a message that will be somewhat help us in making our world a better place and sustaining peace is one fof the main process c:

@Sayanee: that's a really wonderful insight! indeed, connecting with other people and knowing their ways of life is a great way develop care and mutual feelings for each other. with this, we can say that all of us are not different from each other because we are diverse. Let's eep talking and traveling and connect with the world c:

@Nubi: Children hopes very well in the gift and blessings of peace and it's really up to us if we will give them the inspiration so that they can help us in the process. but i am very much happy that even at their young minds, they are really showing their support for this cause and i am also moved by their actions. it seems that, they are the ones who inspire adults the mosr c: glad to have them in our lives. and wow! your actions for peace are really amazing! bringing together people from all walks of life to their interests is really something great. we can really use our talents in bringing peace to everyone :)

@Damla: thank you so much c: and really, i love your ideas too. it's really true that believing hard in something is a great way to start up our passion if we want to achieve and sustain something. believing, i believe, is a great fuel to start up our passion. and if we have passion, this wll really drive us to continue the things that we want in life. and yes! dancing for peace. it's really amazing and makes us feel calm inside.

and my way is communication ! i think the hardest thing is telling and convincing something to someone.I believe that if people really think about what u r trying to say, they can break the biases and it's a big step to sustaining peace!

Whenever there is anything relating to PEACE, first thing comes into my mind is Poem of Dr A P J Abdul Kalam

I am sure you will get my answer from this poem itself...

When there is Righteousness in the Heart
There is Beauty in the Character

When there is Beauty in the Character
There is Harmony in the Home

When there is Harmony in the Home
There is an Order in the Nation

When there is order in the Nation,
There is PEACE in the world..

To me, peace is really hot topic in the selfseeking world, means having empathy and it is our responsibility. Peace is when people or groups of people value others as they would themselves, despite differences. It is the coacknowledgment of differences and the shared value to appreciate diversity. Peace happens when people can share empathy with others in situations of difference of opinion and conflict of beliefs. Peace happens when we truly try to understand, appreciate, and listen to each other. Peace building is a global leadership role ,through decision making, or any other action by necessary to attain tranquility. Peace comes by virtue that humanity has inalible rights that life is more pragmatic in every sense. So that, Apathy destroys peace, we must build peace through compassion.

you are really amazing for saying that! :D the people here in CF are indeed amazing and let's be proud with that c:
and you are right. we can really convince many people to join us in our efforts in maintaining peace. with that, we can really build a great connection and that will eventually help us in the process c: i had a friend who once told me that his way of maintaining peace is to promote open mindedness and the demotion of ignorance. i can really relate it here because it is really relevant that we support open mindedness so that people can actually see the essence of what we are doing c:

and this reply is for Jatin:
Thanks for sharing the poem Jatin and i am very much happy that you shared it to us here in CF. the poem itself is a complete manifestation that in order to achieve peace, we need to take it at least a step at a time in order for us to make attain it and we that ww will never miss out anything important in the process c:

For Ekin: thank you Ekin for appreciating c: and i so love your comment. i am really happy that you are so much aware about the importance of having a network of people who act for a common good. it is true that with many heads we can have many solutions and things that will surely help us too ;)
come to think if everyone in the world wil just give an idea on how to achieve peace. i know that we will not just have a single idea but zillions of them because life is giving us a variety of experiences. and if we will have many ideas again, we can have more options just in case that are firs actions do not have much impact on our cause. but i am pretty much optimistic about this matter so i dont really worry c:

wow you really have a nice comment. and it's so amazing! let's get it into the details ;)

" Peace is when people or groups of people value others as they would themselves, despite differences. It is the coacknowledgment of differences and the shared value to appreciate diversity."
--> it is so true! "We are not different from each other. We are just diverse". Though it may sound that those two words are freakishly the same, but my idea is that, sometimes, many people actually think the negative side of being different. Sometimes, it is really difficult to say that i am different from other people. But it's part of human nature that no matter how we try to correct the misconceptions of others, it will still take time for them to change their ideas because change cannot happen overnight for this is a process. So in order for me to somewhat lessen the negativity of the word, I usually tend to connect it with DIVERSITY and that many of us have our unique way of presenting ourselves to other people. it really helps us bond and create a living community c:

and decisions do play a very important role in sustaining peace because it is through decisions that wecan actually make peace alive ;)
