Even though we know about this concept and work forward it, there are many millions that had not even heard about it or do not have a clear concept of it so it reduces possibilities to make some change in the world. How can we spread the word??

Great topic, Johanny! I think it would help a lot if mainstream media talked more about sustainability in different ways. For instance, instead of talking about companies with the highest profits, talk more about companies that are leaders in sustainability. Or mention the sustainability side of important events, for example, in a similar way that the Vancouver Olympics website dedicates a section of the site to sustainability - http://www.vancouver2010.com/s ustainability/

Another thing that could help is to have national public awareness campaigns that would talk about sustainability. Currently, most campaigns focus on small things, like changing light bulbs, saving energy, but often fail to mention the bigger picture that we should all be looking at. Currently, we make people feel good about themselves for having an energy efficient light bulb or recycling while still driving a car for every trip they take or something even worse. Or governments supporting some small green initiatives while still supporting obviously non-sustainable businesses. Is nobody looking at the bigger picture?

I can't wait to hear other ideas too, so please join the discussion!

ya i agree...
even before competition, i know this sustainability as a word not as a concept...
i am really appreciating the whole team and theme which atleast make us aware about this sustainability...
its very important to understand this concept at this phase of life, while we are just approaching the various possibilities of career...

by this type of activities, the awareness can bring with true effectiveness...because what i feel, in todays world, though people are aware but not doing anything with that awareness.
so its better to think effective application with awareness about sustainability...

my personal experience, rather then to go for direct awareness program it would be more effective to create various projects on basis of sustainability with public involvement...

this competition itself is the epitome example for this...

thank you

Thank you for your kind words, Dharmesh. We're really glad to hear that our initiative is also making people more aware of different meanings of sustainability!

I think that the main reason that sustainability awareness isn't at good level (exspecially at smaller countries) is the top to bottom approach.
You already said that mainstream media should be the carrier. I do not agree. Families and small communities are the cells of society, and we should approach directly to them. So, instead of spending money on big (and expensive) media campaigns we should involve local organisations, visit schools and so on. That is the most effective and the most efficient way at the same time. Direct approach gives great results, and even greater when we approach to the youth. On the other hand big media influence is just a waste of money...

I agree with the concept of local awareness but I still keep thinking that in a global or regional level sustainability should be enforced and promoted so that organized individuals could be supported for developing local projects that benefits all.
